When left alone, during both the day and night, the patient lapsed into an “oneiric state” characterized by complex and quasi-purposeful gestures and movements. During these episodes the patient performed simple automatic gestures and appeared to see electrical wires in the room and acted as if manipulating them. These states arose both during relaxed wakefulness and a not welldefined state characterized by an admixture of stage N1 and REM polygraphic features.
