The characteristic clinical features of narcolepsy are chronic daytime sleepiness, fragmented night sleep, and superimposition of REM sleep phenomena onto wakefulness in the form of hypnagogic hallucinations (vivid dreams at sleep onset), sleep paralysis, and cataplexy (sudden loss of skeletal muscle tone in response to emotional triggers, such as laughter, fright, or surprise).
