Familial clustering and a potential Jewish founder effect seem to support the role for potential genetic susceptibility factors.31 There is no satisfactory treatment, although lithium,33 sodium valproate,34 and lamotrigine35 have been reported to be modestly effective in case reports. The characteristic clinical features of narcolepsy are chronic daytime sleepiness, fragmented night sleep, and superimposition of REM sleep phenomena onto wakefulness in the form of hypnagogic hallucinations (vivid dreams at sleep onset), sleep paralysis, and cataplexy (sudden loss of skeletal muscle tone in response to emotional triggers, such as laughter, fright, or surprise).
